Have a loved one that’s a functioning alcoholic that needs to learn to stop drinking
Do you know someone that’s a functioning alcoholic and needs to learn how to stop drinking
Have you ever heard someone use the term “functioning alcoholic” and wondered what they meant by it? When a person is addicted to alcohol, he or she continues to drink an active life. He or she keeps getting up every morning or evening and going to work. This person continues to attend all social activities and does everything necessary at home for the family. Some folks do this for a lifetime and some end up needing help with the alcohol trouble.
As most of us may realize, the only person that can define whether or not he or she is addicted to alcohol and still carrying on in life as “normal” is the one in that situation. If a person is still going to work and performing all other tasks without any hindrances occurring, one could assume that he or she is not an alcoholic.
Some folks would say that if a person is hooked on booze, they would not function; they would have lost their job, their car, their family, their home and so forth. Many people drink every day, not socially but heavily, and they continue to live life very well.
The following are some ways one can evaluate his or her own situation and see what level of alcoholism he or she is at or not at in fact a functioning alcoholic:
Functioning alcoholic questionnaire
• How much alcohol is consumed daily?
• Has the individual lost a job, marriage or property because of the drinking?
• How early does the person start drinking each day?
• Has the individual been to a rehabilitation center or detox?
• Has the person been arrested for incidents occurring while intoxicated?
The previous evaluation may insinuate that someone is in early to mid-stages of the disease, but only he or she can decide that. Information read here is for informational purposes. For further evaluation, it is recommended that each individual seek expert alcoholic assistance.
I had an uncle who was a functioning alcoholic and I really could not understand how he did it. He drank a half gallon of liquor every day and held down a job for over 30 years. One morning he was on his way to work and go pulled over and the officer thought he had been drinking and gave him a breathalyzer which he failed. What I am getting at is he was able to drive and had enough alcohol built up in his system to fail the test.
When I was drinking if I drank every day for a few days I got sicker than a dog and found it very difficult to continue drinking. Now it did finally catch up with my uncle and he had a stroke. Now when he got out of the hospital he did not know that he used to drink and smoke but somehow he remembered some time later. Well he started drinking again and it was very pitiful to see because one arm was crippled and his speech was messed up.
I decided to mention this to let everyone know just how powerful the disease of alcoholism is. We say at our meetings that it is cunning baffling and powerful and it dam sure is!!
